THE BOYS

Matt

Music and Leicester wasn’t always the story for Matt. Coming over to the UK from South Africa in ‘99, and landing in a state school in rural Leicestershire, football was all he knew between the ages of 4 and 16.

Although he wasn’t directly involved in the music scene, music itself was a big part of his life, but not the kind you would assume. He grew up listening to hits from the 70s and 80s inspired by his dad, who influenced his love for the likes of Bob Marley, Simply Red and even the Lighthouse family.

Later on in life he went on to enjoy modern day hip-hop from the likes of J Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Drake; artists that inspired his love for lyricism. It was only in 2020 that Matt decided to chase a career in music, he always loved the art of singing, but didn’t tell a soul until he was 22, 2 years on its safe to say he has found his place, accompanied by a brand new love for modern day indie music.

Owen

A metal head with a passion for indie music! Owen is often found on the Leicester music scene in venues like the shed, but don’t ask him how he’s got there… he’s probably forgot!

Playing his guitar with inspirations of Slash, Brian May, and hints of modern indie from Sam Fender to The 1975!

His love for music came from bands like Queen, GnR, Metallica and Slipknot! This is shown in his energy on stage with his hair flying around! You can’t miss it!

His sound and taste has evolved since then, which creates the unique sound you hear in the music he writes and performs with The Mercians!

Always laughing, smiling, joking and enjoying himself wherever he is, you’ll find him stage left at any show.

Ben

Born into a musical family, Ben's passion for drumming was ignited at a young age while watching his father perform live gigs. Inspired by his father's dedication, Ben began his musical journey under his guidance. At the age of 12, he embarked on a dedicated path of learning and honing his drumming skills, which has continued unabated to this day.

Among his favourite songs to play on the drums, "Misery Business" by Paramore held a special place for a long time due to its intricate demands and energetic nature, making it an incredibly enjoyable piece to perform. However, Ben's current favourite tune to play is "I Don't Mind" by The Mercians, as it holds a sentimental value attached to his audition and carries a joyful memory.

When not behind the drum kit, Ben finds solace in skiing, a sport he passionately pursues whenever the opportunity arises. In his spare time, he dedicates himself to relentless practice, constantly striving to enhance his musical abilities and become the best musician he can be. With his unwavering dedication, natural talent, and a deep love for music, Ben Pearce continues to make his mark as a skilled drummer and an integral part of 'The Mercians’

Harry

An energetic and lovable character, Harry is our little vegan bass whiz emotional support spider monkey with his feet almost always off the ground and his head most definitely in the clouds; there aren’t many jack leads long enough to accommodate Harry on stage.

Born in Warwickshire, he moved to Leicester when he was just a child and quickly found a home on stage and through literature and poems. He shot into the limelight with his ability to entertain audiences, quickly self-learn a variety of instruments and performing in local pubs.

Growing up in two different households, Harry’s musical influence has always been broad. He loves: Rock, Hip-Hop, Rap, and Classical with his biggest influence being RHCP. If you want a playlist with great variety, Harry is your man.

When not with a bass in hand, Harry can be found Skateboarding or taking time to connect with himself, animals and the earth through spiritual practices.

Joe

Born into a household of AC/DC to Robert Johnson to The Smiths, Joe found his passion for music at an early stage from an old classical guitar once brought down from his loft at age 8. Growing up being surrounded by rockers from his parents’ bike club and watching rock bands play every weekend, it doesn’t come as a surprise that that’s all he wanted to do as he grew older.

His musical influences slowly gave his style a balanced blend from heavily struck Pete Towsend style rhythm to a catchy sing along style lead tone, often leaving him with no more than 5 strings per gig.
